Neptune is the Roman god of freshwater and the sea. By the 1st century BC, he had supplanted Portunus as the god of naval victories. Sextus Pompeius called himself the "son of Neptune".
This double-sided intaglio is masterfully engraved onto a lychee-white chalcedony. It features Neptune on one side, and the portrait of a Roman soldier on the other.
Set in 18K gold swivel ring, crafted during the Georgian period (1714-1830).
