Georgian Gold & Carnelian Double-Sided Swivel Ring

By now you probably noticed that we are obsessed with ancient jewelry that opens or spins! Well, this ring does BOTH.
The revolving carnelian showcases 2 types of carvings: one side bears a bow & arrow *intaglio*, while the reverse is a Roman soldier *cameo*.
- Intaglio: carved into the stone, meaning it is sunk into the surface.
- Cameo: carved in relief, meaning it protrudes from the stone.
The stone is in the form of a Pomander (a container of sweet smelling scent) with a pierced top. Essentially, its owner was wearing a perfume dispenser on his finger! Originally it must have a little cap, which will never be found again.
Set in 18K gold, crafted c.1790.
